
Becoming a Monegasque resident

To settle in the Principality of Monaco, anyone over the age of 16 wishing to reside in Monaco for more than 3 months a year must apply for a residence permit issued by the Monegasque authorities.
Eligibility requirements
Before having to provide certain supporting documents, each individual must meet the following eligibility conditions:
For nationals of the European Economic Area:
- All you need is a valid identity card or passport. However, no visa is required.
For nationals of countries outside the European Economic Area:
- Before taking any steps in the Principality, it is imperative to apply for an establishment visa for Monaco issued by the French authorities. Contact the French consulate.
Supporting documents required
IF the individual meets the above criteria, he/she must provide :
- Civil status documents - birth or marriage certificate
- Proof of accommodation in Monaco (property deed, rental lease or accommodation certificate)
- Resident card application form
- Proof of sufficient income (payslip, company balance sheet, bank statement proving sufficient savings,etc.).
- Proof of good character (criminal record extract or equivalent from the last 2 countries of residence in the 5 years prior to arrival in Monaco).
The different resident cards issued
Once the supporting documents have been submitted, four different resident cards can be issued:
- The “temporary” resident card, which can be issued to first-time residents, with no seniority or residency requirements. It is valid for 1 year.
- The “ordinary” category: can be issued to people with a total of 3 years' residence. It is valid for 3 years.
- The “privileged” category: can be issued to people with a total of 10 years' residence, and whose presence on Monegasque territory is effective. It is valid for 10 years.
- The “Monegasque spouse” category: may be issued to any foreigner who is the spouse of a Monegasque citizen and has been resident in the Principality for at least 1 year. It is valid for 5 years.
